11/07/2009: A Winnipeg filmmaker has won an award at an international
film festival for his documentary about an Ethiopian refugee. Aaron Floresco’s documentary Memories of a Generation: The Story of Ali Saeed and Other Ethiopian Political Victims has been given the Audience Choice Prize at the Films for Peace Festival, currently on in Medea, Italy.

Saeed, who was imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to death in his homeland, has worked for international human rights since arriving in Winnipeg.

The film, which had its premiere in Winnipeg in April at IMAX, is also one of two finalists for the festival’s top honour of best feature film, to be awarded Monday.

Floresco has flown to Italy to attend the festival’s awards ceremony.

The Films For Peace Festival is sponsored by UNESCO and showcases films from around the world related to peace, war, and human rights.
